Step 6: Iterations

For the next step of our project, I began to focus on how I could create meaningful protest art for the fight against climate change. I chose to use screenprinting on clothing as the base for my protest art.

Before I could print my first iteration, I needed to create the art that I would be printing on the clothing. During my research on climate change protest art, I realized that most of it was repackaged statistics and well designed charts. I wanted to create something that made the message clear while still being able to reach an audience that is solely looking for new streetwear style clothing.

I found an artist @5AMROSA on Instagram who built a large following off screenprinting his sketches on shirts so I decided to borrow his style for my protest art and sketched my print.

The sketch is a depiction of the earth being crucified on a burning cross in an attempt to be a metaphor for the rising temperatures caused by global warming.

My next step was to choose the clothing I would be screenprinting on. I chose to use clothes from my closet that I didn’t wear anymore in order to not create more waste from cheap wholesale blanks.

  • Fashion makes a sizeable contribution to climate change. McKinsey research shows that the sector was responsible for some 2.1 billion metric tons of greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions in 2018, about 4 percent of the global total. To set that in context, the fashion industry emits about the same quantity of GHGs per year as the entire economies of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom combined.

After setting up my screens, I printed my first round of iterations.

For my second round of iterations, I decided to highlight the actual process of the screenprinting more by making the print placements on clothing more randomized like they were test prints. I added more logos I had created in the past that fit the theme of climate change. Throughout the process of the second round of iterations, I also began to document my actual printing and the items I was using in.

Final Product

For my final product, I created a video showcasing the project throughout the whole process in an abstract way. I incorporated clips from Soylent Green and Solar Crisis into the video since these films were based on climate disasters and added a sense of urgency to the video while keeping the vintage style I chose to use. I also added a short showcase I filmed of all the final iterations I chose to display.
